Have the Olympics got you moving?
Fantastic Olympics – weren't they? So many people pushing themselves up to and beyond what they thought were their limits. But dedication and commitment are not enough; just ask some of those that, through injury, didn't make it to the podium.
Preparation is key to success, whether it is an Olympic medal or losing weight and getting fit enough to walk up hills on holiday and enjoy it!
So start the preparation early enough so that you can increase activity levels progressively and gradually – the best way to avoid injury. Two steps forward, one step back is not a good way to make progress.
Other things that help are warming up and warming down before and after exercise, stretching effectively and also regular massage treatment, particularly if you are contemplating running a marathon or a long cycle challenge. Sometimes, in spite of doing these things, injury still trips us up. This prompts me to look closely at correct alignment and balanced use of muscles as they operate joints.
